YUME

Yume – 夢 (ゆめ) : a noun meaning ‘dream’ in Japanese

I love the use of the old old Kanji (Chinese characters) for yume: 寝目

寝目” is one of the discarded kanji expressions, but it represents really well the original concept of “yume”

: a kanji character widely used to express the act of sleeping.

: a kanji character widely used to mean ‘eye’ or ‘eyes’ in Japanese.

This zine was designed as a pocket pamphlet that unfolds and reveals Japan as I experienced it circa 2012. The design mimics pamphlets that accompany museum exhibitions, however, in this case I wanted to entice the reader to interact with the artwork, and also provide a one-of-kind poster on the reverse side of the zine.

The images chosen for the zine were purposely devoid of a ton of information, sometimes blurry, sometimes silhouetted. Using a Polaroid Land Camera, filled with the now defunct Fuji FP-3000B, these photos visually emulate my meanderings around the backstreets of Tokyo, and temples near my home.
