THE SKETCH BOOK

I recently completed a sketchbook project that was both creatively fulfilling and intellectually stimulating. For this project, I decided to print a blank 30-page premium magazine for my sketchbook using BLURB. The luxurious quality of the paper provided the perfect canvas for my artistic exploration. I sought to delve into the complexities of black identity within the context of fashion magazines, vintage paper ephemera, bold patterns, and vibrant colors. By utilizing the constraints of these elements, I aimed to challenge conventional notions of black representation and empower black voices in the artistic realm. Drawing from the legacy of black collage practice, I sought to expand upon the intergenerational contributions of black artists in this medium.

Each page of my sketchbook became a visual narrative, combining vintage imagery, fashion elements, and bold patterns. Through juxtaposition and layering, I explored the multifaceted dimensions of black identity, challenging stereotypes and celebrating diversity. The vibrant colors used in my collages added a sense of vitality and energy, capturing the vibrancy of the black experience.

Overall, this sketchbook project allowed me to push the boundaries of my artistic expression while engaging with important socio-cultural themes. It provided a platform for me to explore the complexities of black identity within the context of fashion and media, and to contribute to the ongoing dialogue surrounding black art and representation.
